Corpora

Hi everyone again! How are you doing? In this entry we are going to compare to different tools: British National Corpus  and Linguee .  Both are online corpora where you can look for different words and expressions and get results. In both on them, you can find different texts using the expression you need, so it's really helpful when you need to check when to use that expression because you will be shown different contexts where to use it. Let's go with the first one:  British National Corpus When you first go in, you see what the picture shows. I'm going to use the expression in a few days as an example, so I write it on the search engine and this is what it shows. We have found the frequency of use of this expression. After this, we can go to see the contexts where this expression appears. In this section, we see compiled all the examples fromt texts that the British National Corpus has found. If we want to read the fragment...

Thesaurus

Imagen
Hi everybody!  In this entry we are going to show Thesaurus , a powerful tool we can teach our students to use. Thesaurus is a dictionary where you can look for synonyms or relevant words related to the word given. First of all, you write the word you want. I've chosen Literature as I did in my previous entry. Then, you find a list of synonyms of that word, and a small definition under the word in bold. You can hear the pronunciation like it was a common online dictionary.  But if you press the bottom of Relevance , the words change into relevant words, marked with yellow colour from more relevant to less relevant. Of course, it has the option of showing the definition of the word. You just have to press where it sais see definition of literature .

Comparison of Dictionaries

Hello everybody!  Welcome back to my blog. Today we will be talking about some different Dictionaries and which one I like the most. The dictionaries we are going to compare are Oxford Dictionaries, Merriam-Webster and Word Reference. To perform this task, we are going to look for the same word, Literature , in this three dictionaries and see what happens. So, let's start! The first dictionary is Oxford Dictionaries.  When we write Literature in this dictionary, what we see is this: It gives some definitions of the word given and you can hear the pronunciation. You can find, also, the  grammatical category and some bottoms to look for more synonyms and examples for each definition. In addition, you are given and explanation of the origin of the word. The second dictionary is Merriam-Webster. When we write  Literature  in this dictionary, ...

Students’ Needs

Good morning everyone! How is Christmas going?    In this entry we are going to talk about student's needs in the classroom, this is the  type of linguistic exchanges that students need to use.   For this activity, I've selected the first year of Bachillerato, where we can find our subject: Universal Literature.   While the lesson is going on, our students will need a certain level of English to understand it. The materials they will be working with, would be in English, such as their textbook, articles, the literary works and the digital content and tools that can be used (PowerPoint presentations, online dictionaries, moodle, and so on). Moreover, in order to understand some of the literary works, we can use films to illustrate them. So, since they are discussing with each other, watching films, listening to the teacher, reading different books and writing their own papers, they are developing the four areas that a language has.    A...

An illustrative video

Hello everyone, how are you doing ?   Today I have something special; I’m recommending you a YouTube video! This video talks about teaching using ICT, it explains how important it is and how to do it. I would have liked to select a video that talks about teaching Literature using ICT, but those that I found didn’t have the quality I was looking for, and I mean that it was difficult to hear them because there was so much noise, or that the video image wasn’t clear.   All in all, this video explains quite well why to use ITC in the classroom and it provides with some examples. In fact , it talks about Primary School , and I’m interested in Secondary School , but I’ve selected it because I totally agree with the ideas it shows.   I hope you will find it interesting as I did!

What's a blog?

Imagen
Hello everybody again!  If you are here, it’s because you have read my first entry.   Today we will be talking about Blogging and how useful could be to use it in the classroom as a tool. But first of all, what is a blog?  A blog is a virtual space where you can post different things that will be available for people who have access to Internet. The entries will be shown by chronological order and you update it daily.   Using it as a classroom tool has its advantages. As you can see in http://ictsilviaartero.blogspot.com/ , blogs are a great idea to keep in touch with the student’s families because you can post information about the course and the tasks the students have to complete, and they can comment it. Moreover, the blog can be useful to encourage communication between children as well. Including technologies in our programme could be a way of motivating students; they use social media every day and now, blogs can be used in two ways: as an in...

A little bit of myself

Hi everyone! Welcome to my new blog   As you can see, this is my new blog, where I will be posting interesting things about education and one of the subjects I like the most: Language and Literature. In order to make this experience entertaining, I will be talking about how we can use technology in the classroom as well. But, first of all, let's start talking about who I am.      My name is Noelia Lillo and I'm 23 years old. I have studied Spanish Philology and some months ago I finished my Master in Secondary School by which I will become a teacher. Now I'm studying this course to improve my skills and learn new things that I can use in the classroom. By now, you should be wondering: 'why are you studying in English if you are a Spanish Language and Literature teacher?'. Well, that's fair. The answer is that I had always loved this language. When I was a child I started learning it and I totally got hooked. I managed to get the C1 level of Cambridge (...
